1. TERM
A passive fire register is a structured, location-referenced record of all fire penetrations and firestopping installations in a building, documenting the penetration location, materials used, tested system reference, installer details, date, and photographic evidence for each installation.
2. PURPOSE
The passive fire register is the primary evidentiary document for passive fire compliance. It enables auditors to verify installation quality, certifiers to confirm completeness, and building owners to demonstrate ongoing maintenance obligations.
Without a complete, accurate passive fire register, a building cannot be certified as passively fire compliant and cannot satisfy the annual inspection requirements of AS 1851.
3. SCOPE
A passive fire register is required in any building where fire-rated barriers contain penetrations for cables, pipes, ducts, or structural elements that must be sealed to maintain the fire rating. This applies to all commercial, residential, and industrial buildings with fire-compartmentation requirements under the National Construction Code (Australia) or New Zealand Building Code.
4. COMPONENTS
Unique penetration identifier per installation (linked to Smart Pin QR label in FireQA)
Location reference — floor, zone, wall or floor/ceiling reference, grid coordinates or floor plan pin
Fire-rated barrier details — barrier type and fire resistance level (FRL)
Penetration details — service type (cable, pipe, duct, structural), diameter, and quantity
Firestopping product — brand, product name, and tested system reference (CodeMark, ETA, or equivalent)
Installer name, company, and date of installation
Photographic evidence — minimum one photo per penetration
Pass/fail/TBC status
Marked-up floor plans showing all penetration locations
