1.  TERM

Cementitious spray QA is the quality assurance process for documenting, inspecting, and verifying the application of cementitious fire protection coatings — such as vermiculite-based spray — to structural elements, producing individual workpiece quality records with thickness test data and photographic evidence.

2.  PURPOSE

Cementitious spray coatings — including vermiculite-based products — are applied to structural steel, ducts, and other elements to provide passive fire protection through thermal insulation. The effectiveness of cementitious fire protection is directly dependent on correct application thickness and surface preparation. QA documentation demonstrates that these requirements were met at the time of application.

FireQA's Cementitious Spray QA module provides a structured system for recording each workpiece, capturing surface preparation checks, logging wet film and dry film thickness test results, and generating individual quality records — forming the cementitious QA package required for project handover.

3.  SCOPE

Cementitious Spray QA applies to all structural elements, assemblies, or surfaces protected by cementitious fire protection coatings where a quality record is required for compliance, warranty, or handover purposes.

Each unique workpiece (identified steel member, assembly, duct section, wall, soffit, floor, or pallet) requires its own Cementitious Log. Where a workpiece has two different coating specifications — for example, separate interior and exterior systems — two separate logs are required.

4.  COMPONENTS

  • Cementitious Log — one per unique workpiece; records specification, substrate, size, orientation, and a single coating specification

  • Surface preparation checks — QC checks with results and recommendations recorded before coating

  • Wet Film Thickness (WFT) testing — thickness recorded during application

  • Dry Film Thickness (DFT) testing — thickness recorded after curing

  • Photographic evidence — photos taken at multiple stages: before preparation, during application, and after completion

  • Workpiece details — item size, substrate type, orientation, and location

  • Individual Quality Record — generated per workpiece, documenting the full QA process

  • Floor plan annotation — annotated plans showing all workpiece locations with references

  • Audit workflow — daily or weekly audit reports on coating progress

  • Multi-user access — other trades or third-party auditors can be invited to specific work packages

5.  OUTPUTS

  • Individual Workpiece Quality Record — per-item PDF record with all QC checks, thickness test data, and photos

  • On-demand register with photos — progress tracking of all workpieces

  • Annotated floor plans — showing all coated items with references

  • Daily / weekly audit reports

  • Full-size image set — all photographs taken at all stages

  • Final cementitious QA documentation package — full register with individual quality records, for handover to building owner or principal contractor

  • Excel export — all workpiece data in tabular format
